BRING US CLOSER TO VICTORY

Meet Nick

My name is Nick Spolsino and I am 45 years old. I grew up in a big Italian family household. You know the type that three generations that live in the same home. I spent a lot of time with my grandfather growing up, who was a World War Two veteran.

I enlisted in the Army when I was 17 in 1997 and I served through 9/11.

I’ve lived on the South Shore since the early 2000’s I met my wife, Lauren in 2009 and we moved to Hanover in 2019 with our two small children. Our son Nicky is nine and our daughter Emmie is seven. Both attend Hanover Public Schools. My son’s favorite sport is Baseball and our daughter is in Girl Scouts and loves to dance. I’ve coached for HYAA (Hanover Youth Athletic Association) and my wife is heavily involved with the daisy troop in town.

I am running for election as Hanover Select Board to bring fiscal sanity back to a town government that lost its way. My main goals, if elected, are to rebalance the budget to serve ALL of the town residents, stop excessive taxation and spending, and to bring back common sense to governance.

On The Issues

Override

The average yearly cost of this year's proposed override is no different than last year's override that failed by 15+ points.   The Town Manager said in a recent Select Board meeting, that the average cost per household of this year's proposed override is about $1000 .  But what he failed to mention was the other additional fee of $315 to use the transfer station.  When you add these together, there is no difference.  This override is unnecessary and hurts folks that are already struggling with high prices on EVERYTHING.

MBTA Communities Act

The state wants to be able to build multi-family high density housing without any input from us. The zoning law wants us to allocate at least 50 acres for new multi-family housing.  That equates to 800+ of new multi bedroom units and roughly 3200+ of new residents.

What they really want is to change the fabric of our town.   Never mind,  that our resources are already maxed out.   Our water supply is at its limit.  Our classrooms are full.  How are we going to accommodate a 25% increase to our population? The simple answer is that we can’t.   They are trying to set us up to fail, so they can take more control over our town.  I will defend Hanover's right of Home Rule and our ability to determine what we want to do with our home.

Reduce Community Preservation Act Surcharge from 3% to 1%

The CPA has been charging the 3% surcharge on our property tax for roughly 20 years now.  Sure, we have seen some good projects over those years but the Committee has lost sight of what the residents want. We need to put that money back into our residents pockets where it's most needed.  Sending that money to Town Hall only reinforces unneeded projects like spending $6M on moving an old firehouse or $2M on managed meadows at Everett Hall Field.

Selling Town Property

Hanover has 330 of town owned properties. There are surely lots  that can be sold to the private sector to generate much needed income now, grow the future tax base, and alleviate maintenance costs.

Functional Audit

Perform a Functional Audit of ALL town departments to identify redundant and administrative costs and expenses, identify potential improvements in the administrative structure throughout the town, and enhance transparency and accountability.

Fire Marcum LLP

Our current auditor Marcum LLP has multiple lawsuits and has been charged by the SEC with systemic quality control failures and violations of audit standards. It's time to hire a new firm with a fresh set of eyes.

Community Involvement

Foster a new era of community involvement within the town. Create a group of volunteers to donate their time and resources to help rebuild Hanover dilapidated sports fields. Think of new dugout roofs at Ellis field, completed in an afternoon or a new concession stand done in a weekend.
